Mr. Heater MH55FAV Forced Air Propane Heater

Product Description

Mr. Heater Forced Air Propane Heater is a forced air propane heater that offers variable output between 30,000 and 55,000 BTU's. It is constructed of rugged, durable steel and has a heavy-duty high output fan as well as provides instant heat that is economical, efficient. This heater is rugged and has a regulator included.

The MH125FAV sits in the middle of Mr. Heater's line of propane forced-air heaters for smaller jobs (see the MH35FAV and the MH85FAV). The heater gives you up to 55,000 Btu--enough to heat 1,250 square feet. Though the larger models give you more Btus, each heater in the line shares the same basic features, including an automatic shutoff with loss of flame or power supply and a high-output fan that circulates heat quickly. Hooking the heater up to the 20-pound propane cylinder (not included) is easy, and the 10-foot hose and regulator are included. CSA certified. One-year limited warranty.--Josh Dettweiler

Five Tips for Buying a Heater
Choosing a space heater is a matter of sifting through a bewildering array of types, power ratings, and fuel sources. Let's break it down a little to make the process easier.
What are the different types of space heaters?

  • Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
  • Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
  • Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
  • Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.
Should I buy an electric or a combustion model?
If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips.
How powerful a heater do I need?
Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:

  • Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
  • Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.
Do space heaters cost a lot to operate?
As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient.
Are space heaters a fire hazard?
Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

4.0 out of 5 stars good immediate adaquete heat for 2 car insulated garage, February 5, 2006

This review is from: Mr. Heater MH55FAV Forced Air Propane Heater (Kitchen)
This heater based on it's btu's immedately heats a 2 car garage. Within 8 minutes of ignition you can be comfortable with a sweatshirt or long sleeve flannel. The standard gas grill (20lb) tank lasts me about a week and a half if I am out there for 3 or 4 hrs a night 6 nights a week. You do turn it off and on intermittently about every 30 minutes if you have drafts like I do but that's not too bad. I would prefer permanent heat but for someone on a budget for the heater and the fuel it's a great alternative to permanent heat. Plus you can bring it to a jobsite if needed. I have heated a 2000 sq ft 2 story house during rehab processs comfortably with this heater. Almost too small for that but plenty good for the conditons there and at home. Happy with the heater and it only costs 15 bucks to fill the tank.

Heats well but not good for a shop with metal shop tools. Too much moisture in the Propane for un-vented heater. Doesn't take long for rust to appear on the tool surfaces. This would be true for any un-vented heater running on Propane.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine Heater, April 5, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Mr. Heater MH55FAV Forced Air Propane Heater (Kitchen)
I used this heater outside for 7 hours straight and I pretty much burned thru the entire 20# tank at full throttle. It did a great job. I did notice that at full power, the tank really iced up and seemed to reduce the heat output as the fuel level dropped. The height adjustment setting is convenient too. It held up fine in a breezy conditions. It was raining heavily and I operated under an EZ up awning. The heater got pretty wet from indirect rain. After two days of these conditions, I did notice that several of the exterior screws that are also painted black showed signs of rust. The manual did say to not let it get wet while it was operating. The ambient air temp was between 45 and 50 and while others around me were in jackets, I wore a t shirt.

Convenient Heat for Your RVs, Cabin or Home

Camco Olympian Wave heaters are designed and built to provide years of comfortable, radiant heat and economical LP Gas consumption. Olympian heaters produce mostly radiant heat as a result of a flameless catalytic combustion process. Its efficiency is high because combustion takes place at relatively low temperatures. The wavelength of the radiant heat produced by Olympian heaters is particularly effective for creating a feeling of warm comfort similar to solar radiation.
The sun is an excellent example of radiant heat transfer, because it transmits energy through space, releasing heat when its rays strike objects and people. Like the sun, Olympian heaters radiate heat directly to people, floors, walls and other objects without heating the air first, so warmth is felt immediately. Radiant heat is absorbed by objects and then emitted into the air to heat the surrounding area. Therefore, your Olympian heater should be oriented to direct its heat rays toward the space to be heated, much like a floodlight is positioned to illuminate a desired area.

Safe, Clean Efficient Propane

Camco Olympian Wave heaters utilize safe, clean efficient HD-5 propane gas. Heaters are designed to operate with a manifold pressure (the gas pressure downstream from the appliance controls) of 10.5" w.c. (0.38 psig). A gas supply pressure of 11" w.c. (0.40 psig) minimum is required at the heater controls. In addition, the supply line must be equipped at the cylinder with a listed low pressure LP regulator set to deliver the specified pressure. To ensure that you are getting a quality product, each Olympian Wave heater undergoes rigorous safety, performance and quality assurance testing before leaving the factory with the end goal to produce a product that delivers years of trouble-free service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Camco Olympian Wave 8 Heater, January 6, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Camco 57351 Olympian R-Volt Wave-8 8000 BTU LP Gas Catalytic Heater (Automotive)
The unit has been used twice and works perfectly. In addition, when I had a question about the unit, the tech support folks were right there with speedy, courteous information. For their size, these heaters do not have the raw output of something like a "Buddy Heater." However, there are some big differences. Buddy Heaters do not work above 7,000 feet. Therefore, of little use in Colorado. Second, these heaters burn exceptionally clean requiring very little ventillation. Previously, I was using a radiant kerosene heater to keep my enclosed trailer warm during hunting season. It took huge amounts of ventillation to keep the carbon monoxide detector from going off (read "to stay alive".) A clean efficient burning process is critical for me when I use the heater for my hunting trailer. In addition, because these heaters hook up to a large propane tank, they can run for a very long time with no input from the user. I am very satisfied with this unit.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Heater!, February 5, 2010
By
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Camco 57351 Olympian R-Volt Wave-8 8000 BTU LP Gas Catalytic Heater (Automotive)
I purchased this heater to use in my cargo trailer/camper at high altitudes. While I haven't been camping this winter I use the heater to warm an 8' x 12' insulated shed at home (altitude 8600') on low, with outdoor temps in the single digits it keeps the building comfortable. It is rated for use at altitudes up to 12,000 feet, there is no odor and it uses very little propane!

My only complaint is that there is no standing pilot or way to regulate temperature (thermostat) it's either off or on. There are three settings, but that's it. I guess this is due to the design of the catalytic pad and a small trade-off for such a great heater.

This heater is well constructed with quality materials and I expect it will last a long time. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another and highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Heater With One Minor Factory Induced Flaw, December 1, 2010
By
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Camco 57351 Olympian R-Volt Wave-8 8000 BTU LP Gas Catalytic Heater (Automotive)
This is a great heater. There is one factory defect that needs to be addressed. The cap of the control valve on some of the heaters was machined too deep preventing the control valve shaft to be fully depressed. This prevents the opening of the gas flow prohibiting the ignition of the Catalytic Heating Element. The solution: Pull off the Control valve cap and stuff a small ball of paper into the sleeve. This reduces the length of the sleeve and allows the full depression of the the shaft allowing ignition. Then call the company and ask for a replacement cap. Don't let this small problem prevent you from buying this great heater. Stay warm and enjoy!
